Sam's Lists

Yes, I am a list person.  I LOVE checking things off lists.  Always have, always will.  NO, Sam's Summer Checklists were not a way for me to push this obsession onto my son.  It was actually thought-out strategy two kill two birds with one stone.  First, I wanted to use them as a guide to teach Sam how to think through his options and come up with a way to fill his time that is either productive or entertaining, and how to balance/prioritize the two.  Second, I hoped that it might help me.
"Mommy, I don't have anything to do!"
"Sam, go check your list!"

What on Earth would you put on a weekly checklist for a 6 year old?  I am SO glad you asked.

Left Column: scheduled activities for the week, broken down by day.  Everything from swim practice and WOW Wednesday to playdates and trips.  Good to know what's coming at you on any given day.

Right Column: Ways for him to fill his unscheduled time, including play and responsibility.  A few chores each week, one or two "homework" assignments, a list of books to read, some ideas of things to play with Annabelle, some ideas of things to play alone.  Each week also included an outdoor water activity other than the pool (sprinkler, washing the car), and new "life skill" to work on, and a cooking lesson that he and I would do together.

We worked on things like tying shoes (still working...) and basic knife skills.  We learned to cook things like grilled cheese, with supervision, and tried our hand at some cooking experiments.  The candied popcorn turned out ok, but a bit gummy.  The rock candy was a slooooooower than expected process, but eventually we got some results.

I am happy to report that the system really did work for us!  Sam has always been a kid that requires a lot of attention and often needs help getting started on activities.  This helped him to see what his choices were.  Yes, he generally went for the fun options first and found himself with nothing but chores and homework come Saturday.  A lesson, right?  If I had to choose right now I would definitely use the the system again next year, but we'll see where we are in 8 months!

July Fun

You really have already heard about almost every moment of July already.  We were out of town 19 of its 31 days, and VBS accounted for another 5 of them.  But...

The night before we left for The River we all went to an Astros game.  We were with a Young Professionals group that Chris is a part of...and we felt very, very old.  Chris was doing more recruiting than anything else.

I continued to run almost every morning over the summer.  Because we had so much going, that often meant I was still getting up before 6am.  Summer relaxation, right?  BUT sometimes there are rewards for hard work and dedication, like getting to see a beautiful sunrise on the quiet path.

We spent lots of free time.  Most of it was in the pool:

But some of it wasn't.  Which is when we caught this guy.  Isn't he cute?

And one day we found Sam asleep in the hideout under his bed.  Like I said, it was a busy month!

June Fun

At this point I've brought you up to speed on the "big ticket" items that blocked out most of our summer.  Here's a little more on the day to day fun the filled the in between.

Old Friends
They walked into our home on the evening of the very first community group meeting we ever hosted.  We prayed for a lot of things for each other.  And they moved away.  She had met Sam - when he was 1.  They were in town for appointments at The Med Center, and we got to meet for lunch!  I got to meet her daughters, the ones she has spent the last few years bringing home from China.  My heart was happy.  (And then the kids and I hit up a park in our old neighborhood!)

Bowling
There's all kinds of special offers provided by different bowling allies all summer long.  Fortunately a friend compared them all for me and presented me with the best deal.  As a thank you, we graced her family with our presence for some bowling fun.  We also went back later in the summer, just the three of us, when Sam was recovering from his week-long bug.

New People
Aunt Betty had her baby at the beginning of the summer.  We saw him when he was less than 12 hours old.  Hadn't had a bath yet!  We were all in awe.  New people are the coolest.  (Of course now I write this in September and he weighs not-even-2-pounds-less than Annabelle did at her first birthday.)

Chick-Fil-A
Don't make fun.  Chick-Fil-A brings legit joy to our family.  Did I tell you that they opened one about a mile from our house?  Yes, bike-ride-able.  We were counting down to the grand opening all spring.  And then they ran a Facebook promotion involving a chance to win entry to the Red Carpet Preview Night.  Spoiler Alert: I WON.  From the moment I found out until the night we went, the kids sang out every time we drove past, "11 days until it opens, but only 9 for us!" on down to the last day.  Y'all, set tables, assigned seating, red carpet, a tasting menu, tours of the kitchen, giveaways...Good times.  Aaaannnddd I bought these refillable mugs because they fill them up with their glorious diet lemonade for $0.50 (I suppose you could fill them with Diet Dr. Pepper.  Or even some other soda, but why would you?)  The continued to give us free food all summer.  Bless Them.

Blueberry Picking
You know we went.  Every June.  All 4 of us would be crushed to miss it.  It was a record breaking year for us: 16.92 pounds.  You'd be shocked to know how many we were able to eat fresh.  Yes, we have a stash in the freezer for the winter.  (Ugly, matching neon shirts strategically selected for easy visibility through rows of bushes.)

WOW Wednesday
Thus summer our church offered up a fun new program.  Each Wednesday morning was a 3 hour program for kids and moms to experience both together and separate.  A different theme each week (Bugs from the Museum of Natural Science, Sports, VBS work day, Robotics - we missed that week, boo! - service projects, etc.  We packed lunches to eat with friends and then stayed to play on the indoor playground.  Awesome program - hope they do it again next year!

Playdates
No better way to spend a summer day.  We did lots, including one morning where I had both kids invite over a friend at the same time - and they weren't siblings!  It was a risk, but it worked beautifully.  I am so happy that we are building our network of playmates right here in our own neighborhood.

Other VBS
Did I mention that the kids went to a VBS at a church down the street?  That's right, THE KIDS.  They take 3 year olds even if mom doesn't volunteer.  Not a free VBS, but worth every penny.  Unfortunately one day was canceled due to a tropical storm that never happened, but the kids want to go back again next year.

Same idea: Sam did one day of Parents Day Out at Westwood Gymnastics.  He basically moves for 4 hours.  Again, money well spent.

Pine Cove: Camp In The City

This year I decided that Sam was old enough to sign him up for a true day camp.  Pine Cove is a multi-location Christian camp here in Texas that also runs day camps, staffed by traveling groups of college students, all over they city.  The camps came highly recommended to us by several families not only because of their awesome schedule of activities, but because of their dedicated staff that puts time and effort into pouring into the campers hearts.  We were not disappointed.

The camp even has this schnazy app that not only allows you to stay on top of the bible stories they're learning each day and the memory verse, but they also posted pictures each day!

I loved that he spent time each day reading from a real bible and hearing God's word from a cool college guy.  I loved that he had a buddy from school with him.  I loved that he did awesome stuff like the rock wall and all kinds of inflatable craziness.

And I love that I scheduled it for August.  Because August is hot, long, and generally under-scheduled.  Same time next year?

Hilton Head 2015

We stayed to help clean up VBS for about an hour after it wrapped up at noon on Friday.  Less than three hours later we were on the road to HHI.  I think the Lord is trying to force me to become a quicker packer.  Or a better planner - I organized and assembled all the kids' road trip activities for this trip in mid June because I knew that would be my last chance.

I think that our drive there must have been relatively uneventful this year because I really can't remember anything specific to tell you about it.  We now have motion sickness patches that Sam wears and ziplock bags conveniently stashed just in case, but he didn't need them.  They know what to expect now and are getting a bit better at entertaining themselves each year.

A smooth trip led us to arrive on the island in time for breakfast at Hilton Head Diner.  Oreo Pancakes for everyone!  Followed by the windiest beach experience I've ever had, although its amazing how much fun two kids can have with some now-empty to-go coffee cups.  (I had towels and suits and sunscreen strategically placed in the car but couldn't make it work for the beach toys.  How much do you want from me?!)  Then it was our new traditional lunch at the Frosty Frog, by now we had 9 of our 13 on the island.  A bit of time shopping and then we were able to get into our rental house.  A total "bonus" vacation day (check-in isn't till 4)!  I am so thankful that our children are now old enough to rock this kind of day, with lots of going and no home base aside from your car, which was our only base for about 24 hours.

Let the vacation begin!  Can you believe we added two babies to the family since we were in the same place 13 months ago?  So yes, there was a different dynamic to the week than in years passed.  There were days when we had one of the 5 children sleeping for almost a straight 24 hours (yes, Elizabeth was 3 months old and naps every hour and a half, but still!).  With two babies under 1 and a sick 4 year old, many were pleased as punch to hang around the house, pool and beach for most of the week.  Ironic, since our foursome is just coming out of that stage and is ready to be out and about more again.  Which is why we ended up dividing up more.  No one attempted a 13-person bike ride, more like 4 at a time.  Groups of 2-4 would meander to and from the beach over the course of a 4 hour period.

But at 6:45 on Monday evening we were ALL DRESSED AND READY at exactly the same time.  For our professional photo shoot, the one that had been gifted to Gommy for her 60th birthday.  And because the Lord is good, we had a picture of all 13 of us, and one of Gommy and Papa and the Grandkids - with no one crying and everyone looking at the camera - within the first 8 minutes.  The rest was just bonus.  (Pictures to come, I finally mailed the check for our order this week!)

We all made it out to dinner together exactly once, for our evening at Harbor Town.  No one wanted to miss Crazy Crab.  And oh the joy of watching my kiddos watch Greg Russel.  He's been doing this as long as I've been alive.  I can't imagine it can last much longer, but I hope he stays long enough that these evenings will be a memory for Annabelle as well as for Sam.  And maybe even long enough that we can get a little cousin group to stand up and sing!

We also all made it to Putt Putt!  I can't tell you the last time we went during the day, but this year everyone was ready for a beach break.  And since Pirate's Cove practically shares a parking lot with The Diner, there was an obvious lunch choice built in.

On Friday night most of us made it to "The Place Where They Cook Right In Front Of You."  We had discussed this at length with Annabelle ahead of time and honestly thought that we had a plan for her to duck and cover and the moment that the fire came.  We clearly misunderstood each other.  The child hid under the table from the moment our chef arrived until he left, and was pretty annoyed every time she glimpsed fire at another table (fortunately my new dry cleaner got all that grease out of her new dress).  She ate nothing.  Sam cleared his plate and loved every minute of the show.  Chris and I both caught a tossed shrimp in our mouths, which does earn you a lot of points with your 6-year-old.

Beach walks and sandcastles, bike rides and swimming.  Annabelle mastered her drip castle technique was frequently spotted in the pool all alone (completely supervised!) for over an hour while others and lunch and hung out.  Sam swam and jumped and dug and piled.  She slept most afternoons, except the one when we spotted her standing in the media room window looking down on us enjoying "adult time" at the pool.  Creeper.  He vegged with his tablet for his afternoon downtime.

On Thursday night Chris and Gommy and Papa and I tried to babysit for Elizabeth, Molly and Kyle.  It started out fine, but honestly was a bit of a comedy of errors.  I got E to fall asleep on me for exactly the prescribed amount of time, but struggled to get her to take her bottle.  Putting her down for the night turned worse, much screaming at us.  Until my mom brought her to me awhile later, all smiles.  She was practically giddy as long as we let her be awake, screaming if she sensed we were trying to make her sleep.  And she was awake when her parents got home.  Babysitting fail.  So while Gommy was helping E, I tended to Molly and Kyle.  I bathed 3 children that night, none of which were my own.  I followed the written bedtime instructions to a T, even allowed Molly some ice cream for swallowing her yucky medicine even though that wasn't on the note, figuring even if the 4 year old was pulling a fast one on me, that's what Aunts are for, right?  Well she was doing fine, and then happy-go-lucky Kyle lost his mind.  Hadn't seen him that upset all week.  Nothing calmed him down.

Turns out that Elizabeth's sleep was on a downward spiral all week and Kyle was still on Pacific time and not at all ready for bed.  Accordingly, I take no responsibility for our collective babysitting failures.  Traveling with babies - I'm so happy to be playing the Aunt card on that one these days!

The kids moved from the bunk room to the media room mid week due to Molly's illness.  They slept better that way.  Sam caught the illness on the last night.  It was a bummer because he ended up being sick for almost a week back home, but he also slept for all but about an hour and a half of our drive home!

And...Uncle George brought his Go Pro Camera
